Finding the Right Therapist for You

Finding a good “fit” is key to determining the success of your journey in therapy.  It is important for a client to feel a connection with their therapist in order to feel comfortable, heard and respected. However, what does it mean for a therapist to be compatible with a client? How can you expedite the process of finding a therapist who is a good fit for you?

When searching for a therapist, you should think about your personal goals for therapy which include what you hope to gain from the experience. I recommend jotting down what is bringing you to therapy, the identities you align yourself with, and the therapy modality you feel most comfortable with. Each therapist has a different specialty and niche, so when searching for a new therapist, you can seek out therapists by gender, expertise, approach to therapy or a variety of other variables. By evaluating a therapist’s past work experiences, a potential client can determine if those experiences might be a good match.

Birch Psychology is home to over 30 clinicians who specialize in a wide range of therapy niches. When browsing the Birch website, if you hover over the “About” tab and then click “Find a Provider,” a list of clinicians at Birch Psychology will appear. The clinicians listed are categorized by specialty, areas of concern, therapy method, and licensure. If you want to learn about a specific clinician, go to the “Our Team” section also under the “About” tab. Kyndal Sims, the practice manager at Birch, handles all client intake calls to best match a client with a therapist. Kyndal knows each clinicians very well, making her an excellent resource for finding the right therapist for you.

Finding the right therapist, also means finding one that fits your budget. Therapy can be very costly, so it’s important to keep your budget in mind. Some therapists accept insurance, including Medicaid, or offer a sliding scale policy, which can be necessary for people needing financial assistance.

While finding the right therapist for you can be difficult, there are many resources nowadays that make the search for one much easier. It is essential for clients to feel a connection with their therapist where they feel comfortable, heard, and respected. Compatibility between a therapist and a client means that the therapist understands and aligns with the clients’ needs, goals, and identities. Birch Psychology, with its extensive roster of specialized clinicians, offers a structured and supportive way to navigate the search for a therapist who is just right for you.
